Reading Is My Positive Substance

by Emma (Mililani), age 11

My substance is reading. I like reading because it takes me into another world of imagination. Everyday, I like to read a book, if not more, and almost everything I know comes from reading (and school). When I read, I go on a pretend adventure, and that helps me to calm down and pass the time. Reading is something I like to do for fun, and that’s something that can always get me out of bed in the morning.

Surfing Is My Positive Substance

by Noah (Kailua), age 12

My positive substance is surfing. This is my positive substance because it lifts me up and boost my mood. One reason I like surfing is it challenges me physically, such as when I am paddling out to catch a wave. The feeling of riding a wave is unexplainable and exciting. Surfing raises my dopamine, which makes me feel happy and free. When I surf, I get to interact with others that have the same passion as I do. Surfing also lets me bond with my dad and helps to keep me away from drugs. Doing drugs may have a negative effect on my ability to surf, which could get me hurt. Surfing is my positive substance.

Reading Is My Positive Substance

by Jayda (Kailua), age 12

Reading is my positive substance. For me, reading brings me to a whole new world or dimension. It helps me to escape reality. Suddenly I am viewing a foreign world from the eyes of the narrator. I am battling against ogres or titans or an evil group trying to destroy the whole world. Whenever I read, all my stress from before suddenly subsides. My sadness or anger is turned into joy and happiness. Reading calms me down and helps me to enjoy or relax the peaceful time that I have. Reading takes me on an exciting adventure and also gives me new and exciting experiences. With reading, I don’t need to use negative substances, such as drugs, alcohol, or vaping. Softball Is My Positive Substance

by Ivi (Kailua), age 12

My positive substance is softball. I have been playing since I was around five years old. Playing softball makes me really happy and it is my favorite thing to do. When I get older I want to play softball in college and maybe play in the Olympics. I know that may sound crazy, but it is my dream and I really hope to achieve it in the future. I practice three nights a week with my team and then usually two other nights at home, and play two games on Saturdays. Playing softball keeps me super busy, but I love it. I have never really thought about doing any types of drugs or alcohol because I know that if I state doing that kind of stuff it could have a negative effect on my health and how I play softball. Drugs and alcohol could also ruin my future goals of playing softball in college. I am very passionate about this sport and I wouldn’t want anything to ruin my chances of achieving my dreams.

Writing Is My Positive Substance

by Isabella (Kailua), age 12

My positive substance is writing. Writing may seem dull and boring, but some people have to try it for themselves to see and understand the impact it has on so many people. I deal with my feelings through writing because it helps me to express how I feel without any judgment from others. Writing may be viewed as encouraging, inspiring, meaningful, and relatable to some. I strive for my writings to be relatable and impactful because there is so much darkness and sorrow in this world that we all need a tiny dose of hope and encouragement.

I have always desired to be a “person of substance” or a motivational writer because the passion I’ve had to encourage others is obviously there and my obsession of trying to be a person that you can rely on. My hope is that one day people will write letters of encouragement to others until everyone receives a letter, lifting each others spirits. Life in general is rough, scary, harsh, and writing can help express how you feel about what is happening in your life. If anyone judges you, ignore them and remember that they may need encouragement, a little ray of sunshine, in there dark room.

Baking Is My Positive Substance

by Charley (Kailua), age 12

My positive substance is baking, specifically desserts. Baking is my positive substance because it gives me time to calm down and take as much time as I want. When I bake, it is a quiet time for myself. Baking also makes me adventurous and creative. Another reason it is important to me is because I get to spend quality time with my family or friends. When I was little, I remember baking with my sister and as I got older I started to bake with my friends. My family and friends also like desserts so that is a good thing because I like to bake a lot. I am probably better at baking than cooking because I like to stick to recipes and using more ingredients that I am familiar with. Baking helps me stay away from negative substances, such as alcohol or drugs by distracting me and keeping me busy. Baking calms me down and helps to relieve the stress that I am feeling at the moment instead of using negative harmful substances.
